Emergency care, of all our hospital services, is the most critical to peace of mind and life for all who enjoy living in our beautiful mountains. The new emergency department will have an efficient patient flow, top notch equipment, and tangible improvements to our most highly utilized area in the hospital. Funding is needed to complete this project.
MAMA and EMS Road Transport Programs
Emergency care is one of the key needs in any rural hospital. With the link to Mission Health, emergency care has evolved into a region-wide system equipped with the following key features: an updated, well-staffed emergency department that can handle patients with any trauma and stabilize any medical emergency situation; Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA), which enables rapid helicopter transportation to specialized trauma centers.
3D tomosynthesis is new, cutting-edge technology that improves detection rates from 2D mammogram by more than 50 percent. By minimizing the impact of overlapping breast tissue, 3D tomosynthesis can make a tumor easier to see. Because of this new mammography equipment, there is a likelihood of earlier and more comprehensive details in this detection. More than 15 percent of women have another tumor in the same breast or in the other breast, and this equipment screens the whole breast, allowing for more accurate readings of size, shape and location of abnormalities. This allows the patient to receive faster and more individualized treatment.
Virtual Care Center
Virtual care can help hospitals and health systems utilize the current supply of physicians more efficiently, connect specialists to rural hospitals and improve patient access to physicians. Mission Health seeks to improve the health of the people of western North Carolina by providing world-class healthcare close to home utilizing virtual care offerings. Investments in state-of-the-art technologies will ensure that WNC residents have access to heath-care services when and where they need them by bridging the distance in time and travel with virtual care. In addition, Mission partners with specialized and highly trained medical staff to coordinate clinical programs that are relevant and needed throughout WNC.
The Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine
Emergency care is one of the most critical needs of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. The extension of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital emergency department will allow for improved speed and access to care. The Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine will be an epicenter of critical care access and home to many specialty services. Designed with the understanding of the importance of fast-access to care in an emergency, MAMA will be able to land on top of the building with access to the elevator that will directly connect a patient to the specialty service he or she needs. The Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine will be a vital extension to Highlands-Cashiers Hospital's own emergency room. This Intensive Care Center will provide access for the entire region and will provide patients with direct access to emergency care when they need care most.
